Sharon Gilchrist has been teaching private mandolin lessons and instructing ensembles for over fifteen years.
Sharon's teaching approach is shaped by her own music education. A native Texan, Sharon grew up playing mandolin and bass completely by rote, performing at bluegrass festivals throughout the U.S. She later attended Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee earning a Bachelor's Degree in Mandolin Performance.
Sharon's playing style is primarily based in bluegrass and new acoustic music genres. Her teaching approach combines both her rural roots music experience with skills learned through formal education. In private mandolin lessons, she focuses primarily on technique, building repertoire, rhythmic accompaniment and improvisation skills. Sharon excels in breaking down and articulating fundamental technique and improvisation concepts, making them easily understood and applied. Much of her instruction is given by ear to develop aural skills needed for playing music outside the classical genre. Reading standard notation, transcribing and arranging skills are offered at more advanced levels. All levels and all ages are welcome.
Sharon is available for private mandolin lessons in Berkeley, California and online via Skype. Ensemble instruction and band coaching are also available. In addition, Sharon offers Beginning, Intermediate Mandolin and Mandolin Fingerboard Method courses available by monthly subscription to the music instructional website Peghead Nation. ONE MONTH FREE TRIAL! Try out either course one month for free by using the code: SharonLand.
